The one to start with

Not everybody needs 4G, solar and an app. If you want to find out what crosses the bottom of your land at night, the Vantage Sentry does that, reliably, for the least money in the range.

1080p video with sound, 16MP stills, infrared at night, a 2-inch screen so you can set it up properly, and a weatherproof case. That's the whole product, and for a great many people it's the whole requirement.

  • Full HD 1080p video with sound and 16MP stills
  • Infrared night vision — black and white after dark
  • 2-inch LCD to frame and check on the spot
  • Automatic motion detection — nothing to configure
  • Weatherproof for permanent outdoor use
  • No app, no account, no subscription

Simple is a feature

There is no pairing step, no account to create and nothing to keep charged but the batteries. Eight AA cells, a microSD card, strap it to a tree. The motion detection is automatic — it triggers when something moves and records.

For a first camera, or for a second and third camera covering the gaps around a main one, that simplicity is the point.

A screen at this price

Plenty of entry-level cameras save a few pounds by dropping the screen, and you pay for it in wasted deployments. The Sentry keeps the 2-inch LCD, so you can see exactly what the camera sees before you walk away.

Where it fits

1.3 megapixel CMOS sensor, upscaled to 16MP for stills — it will not match the Tracker for crop-in detail, and we're not going to pretend otherwise. What it does is tell you clearly what came past and when, which is what most people actually want to know.

Who this camera is for

Buy the Sentry if it's your first trail camera, if you're buying it as a present, or if you're filling in coverage around a better camera.

Step up to the Field if you want the temperature and moon-phase data stamp and a higher-resolution sensor.

Frequently asked questions

Is this good enough for a first camera?
Yes, and it's what we'd suggest. It does the fundamental job — showing you what uses your ground and when — without anything to configure. If you get hooked, the better cameras will still be here.

What batteries does it need?
Eight AA cells, not included. Lithium AAs last much longer and handle cold far better than alkalines.

Can I get the photos on my phone?
Not directly — this model has no wireless. You take the card out, or view on the built-in screen. The Tracker adds phone transfer at the camera; the Ranger sends images anywhere over 4G.

Will it survive a British winter outdoors?
It's built for permanent outdoor use. Make sure the case is properly latched and the seal is clean, and use lithium cells, which hold up far better in the cold.
