Stop driving out to check the camera

Every trail camera user eventually does the same maths: forty minutes each way, a swapped SD card, and the discovery that nothing much happened. The Camojojo Trace ends that. It sends captures straight to your phone over 4G, from anywhere with a mobile signal.

It's the best-performing cellular camera we've tested — and we've tested most of them.

  • Photos and video to your phone over 4G, wherever the camera is
  • Live streaming in boost and auto modes — jump straight to the live view when an alert lands
  • SIM pre-installed and activated, automatically selecting the strongest of EE, O2 and Vodafone
  • 1080p video with good audio and a 0.2s trigger
  • 32GB built-in storage — no SD card to buy, lose or corrupt
  • IP66 weatherproof with a built-in antenna and NFC pairing

Signal, handled for you

The Trace ships with its SIM already installed and activated. It scans for and locks onto whichever of EE, O2 or Vodafone is strongest at your location, so you aren't gambling on one network's coverage map. The antenna is internal — nothing to snap off in a hedge.

Setup runs entirely through the app: tap to pair over NFC, adjust settings remotely afterwards, check your remaining data allowance and top up or upgrade without touching the camera again.

Live view, on demand

Cellular cameras that only send stills tell you what happened. Live streaming tells you what's happening. In boost and auto modes you can open a live view from the app — useful when a notification comes in and you want to see whether the animal is still there.

It does draw more power, so treat it as a tool for when you need it rather than something to leave running.

What it's genuinely good at, and what it isn't

We'd rather you buy the right camera than the one with the best marketing, so here it is straight.

Excellent at: remote monitoring, video quality that's the best we've seen from a cellular camera, easy setup, and live streaming.

Worth knowing: video clips are a fixed 10 seconds and can't be lengthened. Recovery between triggers is slow by non-cellular standards — around 15 seconds in eco mode and up to a minute in auto or boost — because it's transmitting between captures. And there's no SD card slot: everything writes to 32GB of internal memory, which holds thousands of files and overwrites the oldest when full. To pull files off directly you connect the camera to a computer by USB-C, though you can also download from the app straight to your phone.

None of that matters much for monitoring a site remotely. If you're documenting fast-moving behaviour in detail, a non-cellular camera like the Browning HP5 Ultra is the better tool.

Data plans

The camera needs an active data plan to transmit — that's how every cellular camera works. Plans are bought and managed in the Camojojo app, with tiers covering roughly 300 captures a month at the entry level up to unlimited on the top plan, plus optional HD and live-streaming add-ons. There's a free trial to start with. You can change or cancel plans in the app at any time.

Who this camera is for

Buy the Trace if the camera is somewhere awkward to reach, you're monitoring a site rather than filming a subject, or you want to know about activity as it happens rather than a fortnight later.

Buy a non-cellular camera instead if you want long clips, fast repeat triggers, or no ongoing costs — the Vantage Scout Nova is our recommendation there.

Frequently asked questions

Do I have to pay a monthly fee?
Yes — a data plan is required for the camera to transmit, as with every cellular camera. Plans are managed in the app, starting with a free trial, and range from roughly 300 captures a month to unlimited. You can change or cancel at any time in the app.

Can I use my own SIM?
No. The SIM is built in and cannot be changed. The upside is that it isn't tied to one network — it picks whichever of EE, O2 or Vodafone is strongest wherever you put the camera.

Why are the videos only 10 seconds?
It's a fixed limit on this model and can't be changed. It's a deliberate trade: short clips transmit quickly and cheaply over mobile data. If you need long clips, a non-cellular camera is the right choice.

There's no SD card slot?
Correct — it has 32GB of internal memory instead, which holds thousands of captures and overwrites the oldest when it fills. You download what you want through the app, or connect the camera to a computer over USB-C.

What if there's no signal where I want to put it?
Then no cellular camera will work there, this one included. Check your coverage first — because the SIM roams across three networks, the Trace has a better chance than a single-network camera, but it can't invent signal that isn't there.

How long do the batteries last?
Roughly two to four months on 12 lithium AAs, depending heavily on how much it's transmitting and whether you use live streaming. Eco mode extends this considerably. The Camojojo solar panel kit is worth considering for long deployments.
