The Strike Force Pro X 1080 is Browning's compact camera, and it does something genuinely useful: it puts near-flagship trigger speed and flash range into a case small enough to tuck almost anywhere.

Six high-power Radiant 6 LEDs push the infrared flash out to 120ft, the trigger fires in 0.22 seconds, and the whole thing pivots on a neat steel bracket that makes positioning far less of an ordeal than it usually is.

Small, but not compromised

The usual bargain with a compact trail camera is that you give up flash range and speed. Here you don't. The Radiant 6 array reaches 120ft, and the extra brightness lifts overall image quality as a side effect — night stills come out with noticeably less motion blur than the class norm.

Photo quality is much improved over the previous Strike Force. It won't look like a DSLR, and we're not going to pretend otherwise, but it captures daytime and night-time activity cleanly, and the 1080p 30fps video is smooth with well-judged automatic exposure balance.

The bracket is better than it sounds

Anyone who has spent fifteen minutes shimming a camera with bark to get the angle right will understand why we keep mentioning this. The Strike Force ships with a small steel bracket that lets the camera pivot, so you aim it properly in seconds rather than fighting the tree.

Simple to run

No sprawling menu system, no settings you'll never use. Multi-Shot up to 8 images, Rapid Fire up to 8, programmable delay from 1 second to 60 minutes, and video clips from 5 seconds to 2 minutes with Smart IR Video to extend recording while something is still in frame.

As with all 9V-system Browning cameras, night clips cap at 20 seconds and the camera recovers in just under 2 seconds to record again.

Low-glow, and when that's the right call

Low-glow LEDs produce a faint red shimmer at night in exchange for more light. That's the right trade for wildlife-only setups, which is what this camera is for. If you're using a camera around a property boundary where you'd rather nobody noticed it, choose a no-glow model such as the Vantage Scout Nova.

Frequently asked questions

How does it compare to the Recon Force Elite HP5 Ultra?
The HP5 Ultra records 1440p at up to 60fps with a 130ft flash and a 2in screen; the Strike Force records 1080p with a 120ft flash and a 1.5in screen, in a much smaller body for less money. If video quality is the point, go HP5. If you want speed, reliability and concealment at a sensible price, this is the one.

How many batteries does it take?
AA cells — check the manual supplied with your camera for the exact count, as Browning have shipped this model in both 6-cell and 8-cell configurations. Lithium AAs give the longest life; rechargeables should be 2500mAh or above.

Does it connect to a phone?
No — this is a non-cellular camera with no WiFi. You retrieve the SD card or review on the built-in screen.

Can I use it for security as well as wildlife?
You can, but the low-glow LEDs give off a faint red shimmer at night. For security use, a no-glow camera is the better choice.
